صدرت هذه المسرحية 1927، و كانت اول كوميديا للكاتب المسرحي الأمريكي روبرت شيروود ، و أول عمل ناجح له، و هو يتخذ لأحداثها مكانا و زمانا بعيدين كل البعد عن وطنه و عن عصره، فالمكان هو روما و ضواحيها ، و الزمان هو سنة 216 ق.م، أثناء الحروب البيونية التي دارت بين روما و قرطاجنة.
