With the advent of modern 4th-generation (4G) smartphones, adaptive impedance tuners were the first successful example of exploitation of RF-MEMS technology in the consumer market. The roll-out of the 5th-generation (5G) of mobile communications and services predicted an increased demand in data volume by a factor of 1000, as well as reduced End to End (E2E) latency, Massive Machine Communication (MMC) and operation in the millimetre wave range. RF-MEMS technology promised to be a key enabling solution for 5G, and 5G was the killer application scenario for uptake of RF-MEMS in the mass-market landscape and offered a vast opportunity for RF-MEMS technology. This book outlines the intrinsic properties of RF-MEMS technology with a specific focus on 5G mobile communications and services, and looks ahead to the needs and applications for 6Gservices currently being developed; China has already launched test 6G enabled satellites. Commencing with a review of the characteristics of RF-MEMS in relation to the specifications needed for 5G and 6G, the book proceeds to develop practical insight concerning the design and development of RF-MEMS including case studies of design concepts. The purpose of this eBook is to frame the overlap between the demands imposed by 5G applications and potential for 6G technology, and the way RF passivesrealised in RF-MEMS technology can meet them. The approach will be rather practical, and based on the comparison of reasonable specifications vs. the characteristics achieved by physical samples of RF-MEMS components and complex networks. Including areview of market and case studies on commercial developments and failures. A new extensive chapter has been added devoted to simulation and modelling techniques and data. This update of a unique review is timely and will find a wider readership as it crosses into the translational aspects of applied research in the subject and be essential reading for both academic and industrial researchers and engineers.
