American Government and Politics

The focus of American Government and Politics is threefold: to introduce students to some of the primary documents that are vital to understanding the U.S. government; to highlight some of the more famous contemporary political scientists and theories; and to demonstrate how research and data help political scientists better understand the world around them.

The reader features primary documents influential to the American Revolution and the creation of the U.S. Constitution alongside contemporary political science research. Topics addressed in the anthology include the social contract theory of John Locke, the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, and views on the liberty of thought and expression. It also addresses how political parties and public opinion shape democratic processes and governance.

The third edition includes two new readings that explore the significance and purpose of public associations in the U.S. and how the media can influence not only what we think, but also what we think about.
